World War II

The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most bloody battles of WW2 fought on the eastern front from 23 August 1942 - 2nd Feburary 1943.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima in Japan were conducted by the USA on the 6th August 1945, it was followed by a similar bombing of Nagraska on 9th August. The Japanese surrended to the Allies shortly after, on 15th August.

Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during the Second World War; it began on 22nd June 1941.

The Normandy landings took place on D-Day, Tuesday 6th June 1944 and began at 6.30am. It is quite possibly the most famous moment of the Second World War.

Between 4 and 7 June 1942, the US Navy defeated an Imperial Japanese Navy attack against Midway Atoll, in what has been described as "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare".

Between 27 May and early hours of 4 June 1940, over 300,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk.

Following the failed campaign to capture Norway by Allied forces and growing pressure from the opposition, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain resigned from office on 10 May 1940. Winston Churchill then became Prime Minister.

The Battle of Ceylon was an air attack on British warships, harbour installations, and air bases by the Imperial Japanese Navy in Colombo, Ceylon, on Easter Sunday, 5 April 1942, during 1942.

This week 73 years ago, saw the start of rationing of basic foodstuffs in the UK.

The 16th December 2012 marks the 98th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
