70 years ago in Normandy in the evening on 6th June 1944 you could feel nervous excitement. Allied Operation Overlord was fully on the way, end of the WW2 become clearer than ever for milions around the world, but not for those who never left the five beaches.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima in Japan were conducted by the USA on the 6th August 1945, it was followed by a similar bombing of Nagraska on 9th August. The Japanese surrended to the Allies shortly after, on 15th August.

Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during the Second World War; it began on 22nd June 1941.

The Normandy landings took place on D-Day, Tuesday 6th June 1944 and began at 6.30am. It is quite possibly the most famous moment of the Second World War.
